Power Ties is a career awareness program that connects professionals from various career backgrounds with 8th grade students at area New Orleans public schools to talk about career readiness and business etiquette. The YLC operates this program in partnership with New Orleans Outreach.
Power Ties consists of four workshops held at the school site. Volunteers teach seminars using a set curriculum that includes teaching students how fill out a job application, how to write resumes and cover letters, understanding appropriate office behavior, and learning interviewing skills. The program ends with a career day and power lunch where students practice the skills they have learned with a “mock” interview followed by a business luncheon and motivational speaker. Finally, students have the opportunity to go on a job site visit to see a real work environment.
