Role Model

Derrick Tabb

Co-Founder and Band Director, The Roots of Music

Annually since 1986, YLC has selected a class of outstanding New Orleanians who serve as Role Models by actively contributing to the betterment of the Greater New Orleans region. These individuals are an inspiration to YLC’s young professional members and to the community at large.

Derrick Tabb is Co-Founder and Band Director for The Roots of Music. A drummer since the age of five, Derrick is a professional musician and major contributor to the music industry, who believes strongly that music is a powerful force for good.

Derrick’s belief in the future of New Orleans and his dedication to the preservation and celebration of its musical heritage led him to found The Roots of Music. The organization’s successful efforts to improve the lives of youth in New Orleans has led to national recognition. In 2009, Derrick was named a Top Ten CNN Hero. In 2010, he was recognized as a Top Ten Finalist in the Energizer Bunny Hall of Fame. In 2011, Derrick was awarded the Blue Cross Blue Shield Angel Award for outstanding volunteer services provided to the children of Louisiana.

Derrick’s influence on New Orleans’ culture extends beyond his work with The Roots of Music. Since the 1990s, Derrick has performed as snare drummer with the 2012 Grammy Award-winning Rebirth Brass Band.

By instilling invaluable skills and self-discipline, Derrick believes that music education can provide youth with the foundation to make positive life choices. He has extensive experience working with New Orleans school marching bands throughout the region and has served as a marching band drum instructor at both high school and middle school levels.
