Dr. L’Issa Gates practices pediatrics and preventive medicine. She was the first African-American partner at Westside Clinics, AMC, which is now Ochsner Westside.
L’Issa graduated Xavier University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry. She earned her Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. L’Issa is a member of the American Medical Association and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
L’Issa’s influence extends far beyond the medical field as a staunch advocate for children and abuse prevention, serving as a positive and visible role model in the community. She is an active participant in the American Medical Association Doctors Back to School STEM program, an advisory board member to Delgado Community College’s Care & Development of Young Children, and volunteers with Junior Achievement where she educates youth about healthy lifestyles and choices.
For her extraordinary contributions to the healing sciences and her commitment to community service, L’Issa has earned commendations from the Jefferson Parish President, New Orleans Mayor and City Council, and Louisiana House and Senate, and was a recipient of the Gold Doc Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. L’issa has been recognized as a “National Role Model” (Minority Access, Incorporated), “Torchbearer” (The National Coalition of 100 Black Women), “2013 Trailblazer” (Data News Weekly), “40 Under 40” (Gambit Weekly), “Ones to Watch,”“Women of the Year” and “Healthcare Hero” (New Orleans CityBusiness), and a “Northshore Hero” (West St. Tammany YMCA).
