Dr. Jawan Brown-Alexander

Chief of Schools, New Schools for New Orleans

Dr. Jawan Brown-Alexander serves as the Chief of Schools for New Schools for New Orleans, a nonprofit organization that serves the city as a strategic partner and is committed to delivering on the promise of excellent public schools for every child in the New Orleans area.  Dr. Alexander’s team works closely with school leaders and teachers, as the organization acts as a thought partner, funder, and provides support through citywide professional development hubs.

Prior to joining NSNO, Jawan’s experiences as a school leader included her work as Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Co-Leader at Lake Forest Charter School, Interim Director of K-8 Instructional Strategies for ACSA, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Recovery School District, and Assistant Head of School for Accountability and School Performance at Lafayette Charter School.  Jawan also helped found Collab Lab, an organization committed to providing guidance and support to school leaders. She credits her passion for teaching as well as her master teacher and middle school teaching experiences as the catalysts for her work as a leader, mentor, and advisor. In 2020, Jawan co-founded The Power of Colour Network, a mentorship program for aspiring and current doctoral students interested in researching aspects of educational leadership and applying best practices. 

Dr. Alexander is a New Orleans native who graduated from Eleanor McMain Magnet School, went on to earn a B.A. in English Education from Southern University, a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Xavier University, and a Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from Xavier University as well.  Jawan was recently accepted into the Louisiana Superintendent Academy’s 2021-22 Cohort.
