Lafayette Square Conservancy

The Lafayette Square Conservancy (LSC) is dedicated to the preservation and improvement of Downtown New Orleans’ premier park in partnership with the City’s Department of Parks and Parkways. We strive for a well-used and well-maintained public park which serves as an urban oasis for visitors, residents and area workers.

Improve Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square was founded in 1788 and is the second oldest park in New Orleans. The Square is named after the American Revolutionary War Hero, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette.

Located in the heart of the Central Business District, Lafayette Square serves the needs of many. The Lafayette Square Conservancy (LSC) was formed by a group of neighborhood residents and downtown workers in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which left the park severely damaged.

Today the Conservancy is managed by volunteer project leaders of the Young Leadership Council.

The LSC works closely with the City’s Department of Parks and Parkways and the Downtown Development District to ensure that all are working toward common goals. The LSC regularly hosts planting and clean-up days. All of the statuary bed and seasonal plantings in the park are done by the dedicated volunteers of the LSC.
